April 10, 2014
Forewood Academy
Mid-Morning

A band of horses freshly turned out into the steamy morning pasture passed in and out of the dense fog like a flock of phantom birds, gliding through dew dampened grasses the thunder of their hooves carried off into the distance as Randy Hurley stood by the fence and watched them enjoy every second of it. Tossing his denim jacket over one shoulder he slipped his hand into his pants pocket and turned on his heel to head back to the house through the grey dawn light, a heeler mix trotting just behind him. He disappeared into a sturdy looking building off the main road, the sharp crack of a slamming screen door echoing over the pastures, the dog stood a moment at the door before tucking herself into a curled up ball on the porch to await Randy’s return. A pricked ear flicked back every time she heard a noise from within until finally he reemerged, carrying two saddles toward a small trailer by the side of the road, hitched to his ’75 Ford. Cinching both saddles to a sawbuck in the trailer he admired his work for a moment and closed and latched the doors. Scout wagged her tail, looking at Randy expectantly but he departed for the main house, closing the door much quieter behind him as the sounds of a gun battle poured out into the still morning. Gunsmoke was on and as usual was blaring at a volume that would wake the dead but there was Frank Hurley slumped over in his chair fast asleep. Wincing at the noise Randy located the remote and cut the volume by half, gathered his grandfather’s dishes and carried them into the kitchen. He had an appointment this quiet Thursday morning at the Forewood Academy, a place he had yet to visit. It looked fancier than anything he ever had the privilege of walking into but they required saddles and apparently not just any store bought saddles. So he had loaded up his trailer with some of his best example work to hopefully nab another client.

Leaving the dishes in the sink to soak the leathersmith checked on his snoozing grandfather again before quietly leaving. Scout scampered off the porch after him, hopping on her front legs and wagging her tag expectantly. Hurley stepped up into the cab of his truck and closed the door with that solid thunk all old, well made cars made. Scout was on her hind legs now staring into the dusty window as it finally rolled down in unison with the old engine cranking to life. Finally what she had been awaiting all morning,
“You thought I forgot!” he said teasingly and handed the dog a pig ear which she grateful snatched and ran off behind the house with.

By the time he was within a mile of Forewood Academy the mid-morning sun was glinting off the two toned paint of the old truck as it rumbled up the country roads. As was his usual Randy rode with his elbow resting on the window, both windows down and Jim Morrison whispering through the radio speakers. It reminded him that he had a racehorse named after one of Jim’s songs. Slowing cautiously at the gates of a rather prestigious looking place Randy knew a barn when he saw one. Not just any old barn but a fine one! Crawling up to the gates he read the sign out front. These guys didn’t get big on their own like everyone liked to think. A lot of work from many, many contractors went into places like these. just like a carpenter had likely been hired to make this lovely sign. Swinging wide with his trailer Hurley pulled into the drive and made for the nearest thing that looked like a barn as he had been asked a few days prior when this appointment had been made by phone. He wasn’t one to make his small business overly advertised to avoid getting overloaded by too many clients. So it begged the question of how Charlie Forewood had come about his handwork. Usually the client had just spotted a Hurley saddle on another horse and decided they wanted one. Braking softly outside the barn he shifted the truck into park and killed the engine, a squeak of the door accompanying his exit. He didn’t look around for anyone nor did he heed the raspy honk of an approaching goose and set about opening his trailer instead.

Born and raised in Saratoga, NY to an Irish Canadian family Randy grew up in the sport of harness racing and owns three Standardbreds at the moment. He is somewhat shy and standoffish but he will warm up to almost anyone if given the chance. He is usually working during the week so the best chance of running into him is at a football game at the local high school, the Red Mile racetrack where he works his horses, the gun range, or at the local bar on a Saturday night and church the next morning. If you are a boarder at the Hurley Livery Stables you can run into him at almost any time. He is also a leathersmith so if you need anything, particularly a nice saddle, hit him up and he will help you out.

Once he is comfortable with someone he can become a fast friend with just about anyone, particularly if he shares any sort of history or interests with them. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2007 and fought with the Marines in the Afghan war for starters. He’s a nice guy but usually has so much on his mind at any given time he sort of tunes everything else out so one would need to get through the haze to get him talking.

It is difficult to imagine anyone being an enemy to Randy but there are plenty of ways to get on his bad side. The best way to piss him off would certainly be bad mouthing his family or their business. He is a bit of a sports fanatic but it is sort of silly to get into fights over a game, unless of course it happens at the bar and he’s been drinking for a few hours. I suppose if he has any rivals, either in the sport of racing or rival boarders, they could be considered enemies.

Randy hasn’t had a girlfriend since before he left for the military so this is very much open, it’s just catching him off the clock long enough to talk to him that’s difficult. He was in Lexington for a year before leaving for basic training so he was at the local high school and may be familiar with someone who was around at that time. He’s pretty awkward and shy about flirting so it could be rather adorable.

Jim is a very handsome Canadian bred gelding with a Thoroughbred-like head and his athleticism seems not only endless but is getting better as he ages like fine wine as he wins more races every season. He is gutsy, aggressive in harness and a determined competitor. Anyone who drives him is quickly made aware that they are not in control of this race. A seasoned veteran Jim knows where the finish line is and replicates his success again and again in an exhibition of versatility, cunning and masterful maneuvering. He is not only self-aware but knows how far to swing out on the turns to avoid bumping wheels with other sulkies. He is somewhat unconventional with the Hurley’s, being a pacer rather than a trotter, but they wouldn’t give him up for the world after Randy won him in an optional claimer in 2012, he won the award for Older Male Pacer the following year and is looking to repeat his success this season. Original plans were to retire and retrain him but this horse is simply too good at what he does to take him out of the game prematurely and he loves his job. Calm, patient and methodical on the track he brings these traits into his off time and is very quiet and tranquil in any other situation. One of his quirks is balloons, he is simply terrified of them for reasons unknown and black mats on the ground are holes as far as he is concerned. The rubber mats on the floor of a trailer have to be covered in straw or he will not go in.

Elmo is a big boy with a wide swinging gait and loves his job, he is a closer and usually comes from mid pack to sweep past the leaders late, his ideal distance is one mile. This colt is very good and very determined at what he does but this can lead to pre-race jitters that has him acting up in the tacking stalls and sweating profusely in the post parade. Sometimes he gets so worked up he is spent midrace and has to be eased, this has led to two DNFs in his career. Randy has been working with him lately in an effort to get the colt to the starting line in a calm manner. With his handlers and driver he is very obedient but not always mannerly and has been known to nip on occasion while being tacked as if trying to tell someone to hurry up! Also, contrary to popular belief, Elmo does not like to be tickled.

Skully is Canadian bred and of gorgeous coloring with a temperament that makes him an ideal stud. Put out to pasture he spends his days in the off season grazing peacefully or being worked and lunged to keep him sharp. Randy likes to saddle him up on occasion and take him for a ride, his nice smooth trot at speeds of thirty miles per hour makes him a sight to see on the road up to the farm. Though he had to be retrained to take a rider and saddle rather than a driver and harness he took his new training with ease though his confusion and uncertainty were clear when he spooked a few times Randy was very patient with him. He is a sweetheart and some can’t believe he is a stallion but these qualities do come out around other horses and he is never left in pasture with others unsupervised, not even geldings.
